DARFUR HERO: Salopek. Admire? Ogle? EMULATE!
Profile in Darfur Heroism, courage, humanity: "...During my last night in the ghost house in El Fasher [Darfur], I endured my longest interrogation at the hands of an army colonel named Abdallah. He grilled me for nearly six hours, bludgeoning me robotically with accusations of espionage, absurd charges that I knew even he didn't believe. At 1 a.m. he finally played the good cop, and asked if I had any questions of my own. I did. I wanted to know the fate of Darfur.
"More war [for Darfur]," he said without hesitation. He stared hard down at his desk.
After days of lies and mind games, these were the first honest words that escaped his lips." psalopek@tribune.com
Do we become heroic reporters? We become heroic antiviolent fighters of genocide. Heroic. HEROIC! Now. To save Darfur. To save ourselves, our Life.

DARFUR: Virulent "inflation" among we "activists"
Dear Jay, I am reading this article over at the Passion of the Present, and itdoesn't seem as if they care about very much about Darfur. It was the Church, not student, that taught people to care. It is the Church, not the masses, that are risking their necks in Darfur, it is the writers and lobbyists and older people who make it possible for the students to miss a day of school to protest. I am reading that the kind of fasting they are doing is giving up one luxery???? What the ****? Then they donate money to a corrupt system??? Why not give it to the aid workers so the people who need it can get food? I am so disgusted. Here I am with my stomach reeling in pain from the RESCUE DARFUR FAST-TIL-IT-STOPS, and all they did was for show??? Pathetic. I want no part of them. That does not mean I am giving up. Don't worry about that. I am just writing to let you know how angry and disappointed I am. That's all. Your sister, ....
Dear Sister,
The extent of our sickness in our society is beyond extreme dear sister. It makes me think of Jesus outrage in the Temple, flipping over the tables of we, His brothers and sisters, trying one last time to shock us out of our incredible hypocrisy, our bottomless selfishness, our profound spiritual death. We must be an antidote of selfless giving, extreme service.
There is an insidious, virulent type of "inflation" going on among "activists" for change. As you see at passionofthepresent, we want to elevate "token," really blasphemous efforts like a one day fast from "luxuries" to the level of appropriate response, SUFFICIENT response. This is EXACTLY the type of hypocrisy that most outraged Jesus. We've learned nothing. Why blasphemous? To say that the price of 4 million Darfurie lives is college-kids-abstaining-from-one-day-of-luxuries? This is a moral outrage of monumental proportions.
Now, of course your response and mine to this must not be a distancing type of "judgment" from the clinically "sick" inhumanity being displayed by our actionless Darfur Voyeurism of we brothers and sisters. We must feel the extreme pain-of-deadness associated with such "sickness" within our brothers and sisters. In feeling the pain of their deadness, we can find even more fuel, even more energy for our efforts to be an antidote.
I am thankful for you, and grateful because of you dear sister, jay

DARFUR: Calling WE-THE-CITIZENS to GLOBAL FAST-TILL-GENOCIDE-STOPS
Two and a half years ago a Kristoff article about Darfur was a harpoon into my heart. It has remained lodged there yanking me with every writhing of our family Darfur, trying to pull from me the answer: What are we-the-citizens to do?
Well, when finally I as a citizen had an answer for myself (Stand With Darfur-White House II), I was at the same time certain (and in early May, 06 wrote so) that I would never know what OTHERS should do: RESCUE RESTORE DARFUR: How does an outsider live in the face of ...
Well, now I do know what many, many of us should do immeidately. I was wrong. Several of us have begun RESCUE-DARFUR-FAST-UNTIL-IT-STOPS. We call WE-THE-CITIZENS from around the world to join this Fast.
Nothing less will stop the Genocide.

Global RESCUE DARFUR FAST-TIL...: AND THEN THERE WERE FOUR
My dear Sisters and Brothers joining the RESCUE DARFUR FAST-UNTIL-IT-STOPS,
I can't recall personally touching anything before in my life as Holy, as Sacred as you joining the Rescue Darfur Fast. I am quite overwhelmed, in a state of stunned awe, reverence, and utter humility in your presence. The brilliance of your humanity, compassion, courage, faith, Heart, Love... it is Jesus. It is Love. It IS Jesus, in our midst. Blinding. Magnificent. An ultimate Bliss.
We are alone; so far, and it will probably stay that way. Yes, only our Father knows. Selfless acts such as yours ARE the raw material, the ONLY raw material from which He fashions Miracles. Only we can determine our actions. Only our Father can determine what happens from them. You ARE now the Prayer.
I have been alone in a substantial sense for a long time, so it has given me much time to think about the solitary fight. Much of what I have learned about the solitary fight I have emailed to you or posted over the last weeks. But things (below) I will share now that for me, are among my greatest treasures [please, I do NOT assume the following will help you. But it does help me.]:
* There is an often said phrase in what calls itself the church: "Our Father does not call us to be successful. Our Father calls us to be faithful." Now, this is a Terrible, WONDERFUL TRUTH. Terrible because, as you are doing, when we submit to - our Father's will / our Conscience / The Still Small Voice within / The Kingdom of God Within Us / OUR sense of Justice / OUR Humanity / our Compassion... we submit to the most overwhelming task master; far more demanding than Mammon / our market economy / our lusts / fears / desires / social pressures / social norms / the expectations of others / the demands of others / the vision of others.... WONDERFUL because our Father is Life, IS - LIFE. Being Faithful IS TO PARTICIPATE SIGNIFICANTLY IN THE FLOW OF LIFE - is to BE LIFE, is the only way to EXPERIENCE LIFE. The reward is INFINITE Joy / Peace / Love / Life. Our bodies / nervous systems can respond no other way. This Bliss is His Promise, IF we do His will OUT OF Love. So is the agony of Darfur in our hearts something we can be certain of. That will be in our hearts too. So are the hunger pains and physical sufferings we will endure. The Agony and the Ecstasy are ALWAYS together, just like "fire" and "fuel" are always together. The Agony of our neediest brothers and sisters IS the fuel of Life / Love / Joy.... Life/Bliss/Joy/Love/Joy are the "flame" that are released with consuming that fuel. (Oh I wish everyone know this. Hmmm. You are giving others the chance to see. You are the Seeds, the Salt, the Light, the Disciples.)
* To do as you have done, to submit to our Father's will, is to be the Salt, the Light that Jesus talked about. There IS NO OTHER SERVICE. THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO HELP THE WORLD. Not legislation Not food. Not housing. Not policies. Not donated $ millions.(although ALL of these would be ultimate outcomes)... Trying-out-of-Love IS the work, the ONLY work, and the Hope. Jesus great follower and admirer Gandhi said, "Full effort is full success." This is what he meant. There is nothing, NOTHING beyond BEING Conscience in action, being Love / our Father's will / Humanity IN ACTION, that can bring Life / end Suffering; in the same way that only "air" enables people to breath; and only Light that enables us see the Way. When the likes of St. Katherine Drexel, or Teresa of Calcutta tell us that acting out of Love is what matters, not "doing the right thing," "being successful," "achieving the result"... this s what they meant.
May our Father bless your Hearts with infinite Joy, Peace and Love for what you are doing.
Our family Darfur weeps with overwhelming Joy, Comfort, Hope, Relief and Love at your courageous embarkation on Rescue Darfur Fast.

Darfur VOYEURS
Isn't that what we are when it comes to Darfur Genocide? Voyers. I'm talking about you, and me. My goodness, we've written and read trillions of words. Trillions! For what? Obviously NOT so that you and I would DO anything. You can see that by the dreadful inaction of you and me, you know, the GOVERNMENT! [This Truth was Ganhi's great discovery; and Lincoln's - Government of the People, By the People, for the People, and our founding fathers.]
Well, I know that being a voyer at some point isn't enough. [Trust me, you don't want to know how I am so certain. I am certain.] We need to Live, not "watch" life.
It is time. Time to stop being global voyers. Time to be the real thing - global brothers and sisters.

DARFUR FAST TILL IT STOPS: Nothing less will do
Several of us have decided to begin a RESCUE DARFUR FAST. One of us began 5 days ago, and several others today. Click below for the details.
Nothing less than a worldwide fast-until-the-genocide-stops will be enough to stop it.
Nothing less will be a sufficient moral response.
Nothing less will preserve our humanity, yours and mine.

Darfur: One day fast. What will Jesus say?
A post at Sojourners:
Rose Marie Berger: Doing the Right Thing in Darfur A one day fast from luxuries for Darfur Genoicide brings to my mind, Jesus enraged, flipping tables in the temple, trying to shock us out of our miserliness, stinginess, our blind selfishness. Jay McGinley
Dear sister Berger,
God bless your heart for the passion and truth captured in your last paragraph about the suffering of our family Darfur. This is rarely seen in the writings and activism associated with Darfur. And yet, does Jesus feel less agony than you presented? More. Much, much more. Infinitely more.
God bless you your focus late in your article about the responsibility to act. Again, you have come closer to capturing the position of conscience, the position and URGENCY of the one Father, than almost ever occurs for Darfur.
But even your article, and most of what is allowed to think of itself as an effort to Save Darfur, a one day Fast From Luxuries for instance, brings to my mind what took Jesus to the Temple, furious with his brothers and sisters, who he loved enough to pay the ultimate price. Furious, flipping their tables, not in an attempt to hurt his family. But in a desperate, last attempt to shock them awake, so that they might be Saved from the death they were living. (By the way, I see Darfur as one last offering to us to wake up. I think that how we respond to Darfur is of Biblical, global proportions. Never have so many been able to do so much at so little cost. And the best we offer after three years of hand wringing is a on day Fast for Luxuries. Sinful.)
Jesus would not be writing such a nice, even handed article as you did sister. I can feel his rage at our collective, western stinginess, the cowardice, the miserliness of a One Day Fast from LUXURIES in the face of GENOCIDE, FOR GOD'S SAKE.
Nothing less than a Global-Fast-Until-The-Genocide-Stops will be a big enough price to satisfy God, or to convince our Governmental Representatives to move beyond honest "attempts," to "failure is not an option."
Am I angry? Was Jesus Angry in the temple? If it is without Love, I am to be blamed. If I am with Love, let's hear the wakeup call. In time for Darfur. In time for ourselves. Bashir is NOT waiting. Neither is our Father. I feel quite sure.
In Truth and Love, your brother, jay

African Leaders cry out for YOUR Heroism
Full article at AfricaAction.org October 4, 2006Archbishop Desmond Tutu emphasized, “The world can’t keep saying 'Never again' [about Darfur]... The harsh truth is that some lives are slightly more important than others... If you are swarthy, of a darker hue, almost always you are going to end up at the bottom of the pile.” Archbishop Tutu asserted that the international community should make clear to the Sudanese government that it must accept UN peacekeepers or face serious consequences.
H.E. Nana Effah-Apenteng, Ambassador of Ghana to the United Nations, invoked Article 4 of the Constitutive Act of the African Union, which asserts the right to intervene in a member state in cases where crimes against humanity are taking place. He expressed his concern about the urgency of the situation in Darfur, and asserted that the international community could not allow Khartoum to delay action endlessly, but must move forward to protect the people of Darfur.
First Vice President in the Government of National Unity in Khartoum, Salva Kiir, offered his support for an international peacekeeping mission in Darfur, stating, “The aggravation of the humanitarian and security situation in Darfur necessitates intervention of international forces to protect civilians from the atrocities of the Janjaweed militias so long as the government is not capable of protecting them.”
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan told reporters, "I have urged the Security Council to act…without delay, and to be united as possible in the face of the crisis.” He added, “It is urgent to act now. Civilians are still being attacked and fleeing their villages as we speak.”
Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, addressed the General Assembly the following week on September 19, saying, “The world must not allow a second Rwanda to happen.” She added, “My government therefore calls on this General Assembly and the Security Council to exercise the Chapter VII authority to restore peace, security and stability to Darfur.”
Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka was quoted in the South African newspaper Business Day challenging the legitimacy of Khartoum’s opposition to a UN force for Darfur, saying, “When a deviant branch of that family of nations flouts, indeed revels in the abandonment of, the most basic norms of human decency, is there really justification in evoking the excuse that protocol requires the permission [for UN deployment of force] of that same arrogant and defiant entity?”

DARFUR: Never again... will YOU? or ... will I!
NEVER AGAIN! The phrase surrounds us. The way we use it, with a "...will you...," we are using NEVER AGAIN to kill Darfur.
The point - the "...will you...." The implied "... will you..." It is there every time.
"Never Again... will YOU.... allow Genocide." And the "you" is the UN, Bush, Canadian Government, US congress, world....
This self absolving delusion that there is some "you" out there is why the Genocide continues. There is no "you," there is only "I." Never again will "I" allow Genocide. Darfur will die until we embrace the "I;" until we live the "I," UNTIL WE ARE THE "I," live or die.

For one week, these members of Students Taking Action Now: Darfur with Social Responsibility and the Progressive Students Union have lived in tents on the mall, maintaining a strict diet of rice and beans and neglecting basic comforts such as bathing...
Participants in Five for Five say they are glad WSU students are learning about Darfur.
“We definitely achieved our goal of awareness,” said Brittany Magnusson, a junior computer science major and webmaster for STAND with Social Responsibility. “We no longer have people coming up to us and asking who Darfur is. They actually know where it is...
Margaret Singbeil, president of STAND with Social Responsibility, said she hopes the situation in Darfur will achieve peace so STAND won’t still be a student group by next year.

McGarry said his [Darfur] experience was “by far the best kind of work I’ve ever been able to do” because of “the opportunity to interact with the people; the value of the work...” For more than a year and a half, Matthew McGarry coordinated programs in Darfur for Catholic Relief Services (CRS), a humanitarian-relief agency of the U.S. Catholic Church based here.

DARFUR HERO: U. Okla. student Bailey Cato
For Darfur..."She sleeps less, goes out less, and has reduced her course load to work 30 to 40 hours a week organizing student campaigns. Her goal: to end the suffering in Darfur, Sudan, perhaps the world's worst humanitarian crisis... From Student activists rise again - this time for Darfur; By Matthew Clark Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor.
""If people are still dying, I need to keep working," says Bailey Cato, a University of Oklahoma senior and a regional coordinator for a student antigenocide coalition called STAND...
"When Ms. Cato brought Paul Rusesabagina, the Rwandan whose story inspired the movie "Hotel Rwanda," to her campus last Wednesday, he packed the 750-seat auditorium with an overflow audience of at least 1,200 people. "We're young, idealistic, and we're horrified that genocide can go on in this world," Cato explains.

DYING FOR HEROES: Rice? Those who live in glass houses shouldn't...
Darfur? We PEOPLE are the only ones that can save Darfur. Rice, Bush, Kofi... are the hired help. We are the boss. Unless we, the "Boss" begin to perform, Darfur is dead. Our blame of the "leaders" will not bring the Darfuries alive again.
Am I a supporter of Secretary Rice? I am not a supporter of this administration. But she, along with Bush, is putting their "skin in the game." Rice enters passionate plea for the "vulnerable" in Darfur
But as I've said before, regarding Darfur, Bush, and now Rice, the UN's Annan put we citizens to SHAME. We continue to work to "pressure" THEM. I've become convinced that the reason we continue to pressure them, IS TO TAKE PRESSURE OFF OF OURSELVES. We are the only ones that can save Darfur. Rice, Bush, Kofi... are the hired help.

Dear all,
As an ongoing exertion of efforts to help alleviate the grave human tragedy in Darfur, all religious groups in The Netherlands under the leadership of Rabbi Awraham Soetendorp and Refugee Organization under the leadership of Mrs Tineke Ceelen with support of Darfur Call urge UN Security Council to " Smooth the way for the men and women from the community of nations who may act as saviours in the coming days and weeks".

The following is the translation of the content of the declaration:
Declaration "Religions on Darfur" by Rabbi Awraham Soetendorp
In Darfur, the threat of genocide being committed under our own eyes seems imminent. The images of despair and dilapidation from the world's largest refugee camp will keep haunting us. We cannot close our hearts anymore for the call of desperate children. Ajeka: "Man, where on earth art thou?"
Fortunately, after three tauntingly slow years in which the murder of hundreds of thousands of people continued, a world-wide movement of compassion and indignation has arisen. We, religious communities in the Netherlands, join in with this movement. We may not and cannot stand idly aside while others are causing death to our fellow-men. When the lessons of mass murders in recent history leave us unperturbed, the light will surely go out.
After the Second World War, the UN has been established with the aim to prevent genocide. In 2005 they have concluded that states have the primary duty to protect their citizens and that the international community has the responsibility to act when the government refuses to offer this protection. Now is the hour of truth: are we prepared to live by our promises of co-responsibility and humanity or will we, again, allow ourselves to be forced into passivity by the obstinacy of the Sudanese government and a series of sham arguments? Every day counts.
To the Sudanese government we say: "Do not harden your heart. Allow UN forces to do their protective job. Nothing more, nothing less, so that human lives are spared."
To the Security Council we say: "Smooth the way for the men and women from the community of nations who may act as saviours in the coming days and weeks."
To ourselves, we say: "Let our protest against inhumanity be deafening. Let us place a stronghold of safety around God's creatures in Darfur."
The prophet Isaiah calls out: "Peace, peace, to him that is far off and to him that is near". If there is no peace and protection for the displaced persons in Darfur, there is no peace for us. Both they and we, images of God, are indissolubly linked with one another.
To our fellow human beings in Darfur we say: "You are of unlimited importance to us. We do not want you to suffer. We do not want you to disappear. We want you to live."

DARFUR Dying for Heroes: Romeo Dallaire
Comment received today at DARFUR Dying for Heroes
Please add Senator Romeo A. Dallaire from Canada to your "heros" list.
* He has been a devoted and unceasing supporter.
* When there were no organizing committees for the Global Day for Darfur in Canada, he worked through contacts and put together groups of activists in cities across the country.
* He volunteered his Research Assistant as a member of the organizing committee,
* He donated money from his own pocket to fund expenses,
* He fielded media calls and accepted interviews at all hours,
* He was keynote speaker at the Toronto rally....
* and what's most important is he inspires others to action.

RESCUE DARFUR FAST-TIL-IT-STOPS
Note: Photos are from one of the most Heroic actions yet for Darfur: AfricaAction.org Septembe 9th, 2006. THIS is what Darfur Heroism looks like. Some of you seem to share a desire for us to take action for Darfur beyond writing. Make no mistake, writing, blogging, analyzing have a place IN EVERY STRUGGLE. BUT, SO DO FEET ON THE STREET! And, there is no chance so far that history will write that "people did not TALK / blog / write enough about Darfur." My hope now, ALL OF MY HOPE NOW at this stage is for feet on the street. Currently, history WILL WRITE that all we did was... TALK. Nero fiddled while Rome burned....
OCTOBER 5th STAND (Students Taking Action for Darfur) is organizing a 1 day. OK, LET'S START, T-H-E S-T-A-R-T of a worldwide FAST, that we stay on until the GENOCIDE IS ENDING, NOT BEFORE. Is this too radical!?!?!?!!? Does Genocide warrant less?!?!!!? Is this an OVERREACTION TO GENOCIDE? YES, we would almost certainly fail in the attempt. YES, if we got it off the ground and 1,000's participated the effort might fail. SO WHAT!?!?!? As your uniquely brilliant and helpful Alfred Adler said, "Courage is doing what needs to be done,
whether or not you know you will succeed."

Some loose FUNCTIONAL AND OPERATIONAL patterning after the TroopsHomeFast.org effort could be executed.
Full time activists like me - water only to 1000 calories per day. People in school or holding "normal" jobs - 1,000-1,500 calories per day. These are Equal. COMMITTED. PROPORTIONAL RESPONSE. UNEQUIVOCAL MANDATE. JUST. SOLIDARITY. WORTHY.
STUPID IDEA YOU SAY? Two responses. 1. "If at first the idea is not absurd, it has no hope," Albert Einstein; 2. GIVE ME A BETTER IDEA. I'll run with it, even if you don't. I'm going to do something, my best shot. This global Fast idea is
my best so far.OUR YARDSTICK FOR MEASUREING SUCH IDEAS MUST NOT BE "WILL IT WORK." THIS IS THE QUESTION OF BYSTANDERS. THE QUESTION OF THE COMMITTED HUMANE BEING IS, "WHAT IS MY BEST SHOT, MY BEST CHANCE IN THIS SITUATION, TO SAVE AS MUCH OF MY DARFUR FAMILY AS POSSIBLE."

[20% complete. Please check back by Tuesday, October 3, 2006! Better yet, PLEASE HELP!]
Who knows? But for this site, we have to decide and in doing so we consider:
* Suggestions, input, information, facts, articles from YOU.
* We will include every and any individual(s) that we learn of who, IF LOOSELY EMULATED by many could cause the Genocide to stop, now. This is not a "participants" site. This is a "HEROES" site.
* Measuring up favorably to the Holocaust Rescuers. There were only 3 from the United States. Two of them were just awarded plaques a the USHMM, posthumously. More at WASHINGTON POST: COUPLE WHO FOUGHT GENOCIDE; & OTHER NEWS. ALSO: Not primarily for compensation.
* Dr. King and Gandhi unleashed unimaginable force through "undeserved suffering." Heroes sacrifice. "Love cannot resist acting in the face of suffering," said Teresa of Calcutta. Heroes love. Heroes sacrifice, because they cannot resist doing so in the face of Genocide.
* Love is measured not by how much you give, but by how much you have left.
* Major "skin in the game."
* Major contribution toward ENDING DARFUR GENOCIDE NOW.

Pick from a model below or from Posts at left, follow it, AND GO BEYOND. Please hurry.
